By the end of the unit, pupils should be able to . . .

1. Hallo!

Meeting and greeting,  names, countries, where you live, alphabet, spelling, classroom objects, colours, classroom commands, numbers to 31, days, dates, age.


Background : German names

  • Say hello/goodbye, ask for and give names, name countries and say where they live, spell words, say things they have(n’t got) for school, describe things(colours), understand the teacher, count to 31, say days and when birthdays are, ask about and give age.

(Favourite) subjects, timetables, opinions, numbers to 60, time, asking for help, talking to the teacher, breaktime snacks and drinks, school clothes.


Background : the German school system

  • Name subjects and say if they dis/like them, talk about timetables, count to 60, ask and give the time, ask for help in the classroom, talk to the teacher, ask about and say what they eat/drink at break, ask about and say what they wear to school.

3  Meine Familie

Brothers, sisters, pets, opinions of pets, family members, describing appearances and personality, family appearances and personalities, longer letters.


Background : Looking at stereotypical appearances.

  • Ask and talk about brothers and sisters, pets and family members, give opinions on pets, ask about and describe families’ appearances and personalities, understand and write longer letters.

4. Freizeit

Sports, hobbies, free time, opinions, penfriends, arranging to meet, favourite things, reading for understanding.


Background : Looking at sports/activities popular in Germany

  • Ask about and say which sports and hobbies they and others do and dis/like, understand and find out about others, arrange a date with a friend, ask about and describe their/others’ favourite things, understand information from a reading text.

  • Compare and contrast national pastimes.

5. Zu Hause

Where people live, house and home, what you do in the house, your own room and work area, furniture, where it is, longer descriptions, longer reading text.


Background :  German homes/home life

  • Ask and say more about where they live/addresses/ telephone numbers/rooms/where things are, say what they do where/ household chores they do,




ask about and say what they have in their room, where things are in their work area, write about and understand home/what they do (extended).

  • Compare and contrast German/Scottish homes/home life.


6. In der Stadt

Town, buildings, activities, playing a game in German, numbers up to 100, ice cream and drinks, snacks, practising German, modal verbs, plans for Summer holidays.


Background : Look at the different areas in Germany/Austria/ Switzerland.

  • Ask and talk about their town/ buildings/ where buildings are/what they can do in town/give opinions, play a game in German, order ice-cream, drinks and snacks, ask about and say what foods they like, talk about practising German, modal verbs, talk about holidays.


  • compare and contrast geography, architecture, food culture.
